Katharine “Kate” Sarah Colby was born on July 27, 1838, to Lydia Van Dyke and Aaron Colby in Kingston, New Jersey. She was in the first class of the Normal School. Her signature is the fourth one on the first page of the school’s first Teacher Contracts book. She graduated in 1858, and the 1860 census shows that she was working as a schoolteacher and living with her parents in South Brunswick Township, New Jersey. In 1864 she married Presbyterian minister Peter Haverly Brooks, and his work took them to various locations in New York; New Jersey; and Pennsylvania, where they ultimately ended up in the northeastern part of the state. She was active in the church and founded a needlework guild in Wilkes-Barre. She died on October 14, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Clayton Roy Brower was born in 1922 in Kingston, New York. He earned a Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Syracuse University, served in the army, and later earned a Doctorate from Columbia University. He began teaching in 1948 in Pulaski, New York, was the assistant superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools in 1955, then became professor and Chair of the Education Department at Trenton State College in 1962. In 1970, he became Interim chief executive, then president from 1971 to 1979. He died at the age of 99 on June 30, 2022.
James Marion Buchanan was born to State Librarian Henry Clay Buchanan in 1883. His sister was Mary Foss Buchanan (Model 1895) and brother was Malcolm Griswold Buchanan (Model 1896). He attended the Model School where he was a member in the Thencanic Society and graduated in 1900. He went on to Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He died in 1958 in Maplewood, New Jersey.
Malcolm Griswold Buchanan was born to State Librarian Henry Clay Buchanan in 1880. His sister was Mary Foss Buchanan (Model 1895), and brother was James Marion Buchanan (Model 1900). He attended the Model School where he was a member in the Thencanic Society and graduated in 1896. He went on to Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He was Vice-Chancellor of the New Jersey Court of Chancery 1919-1942. He died in 1942.
Clarence J. Buckman was born in 1879 in Pennsylvania. He attended the Model School where he was a Thencanic Society member and censor, graduating in 1897. He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania. He was a state senator for Pennsylvania. He died in 1943 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Edna Buck Van Sickle Budd was born in 1890 to Walter N. Van Sickle and Theresa Buck in Unionville, NY. Shortly after, the family moved to Wantage, NJ. She attended the New Jersey State Normal School in Trenton where she was president of the class of 1911, a member of Gamma Sigma literary society, and a member of the short-lived social club the “Sacred Nine.” She taught 6th grade in Chatham, NJ schools for three years before marrying Merritt L. Budd (1887-1952) in 1914. After her children were born, she was active in their school’s Parent Teacher Association, as well as a wide array of religious, civic, and history organizations. She also remained active in the Trenton State College, Gamma Sigma Nu alumni group. She died in 1982.
