Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, The College of New Jersey is the oldest teacher training college in the state and the ninth oldest in the nation. Originally located in downtown Trenton, the college expanded academically and physically, and later moved to suburban Ewing Township in the 1930s.
Over the years, the name of the college has changed to reflect its expanding mission.

Biographical history
Charles A. Krauch was a Trenton photographer who captured many of the early class photos of the New Jersey State Normal School at Trenton. He was active in Trenton at several successive addresses from 1890 to 1898. He opened his own gallery in 1890. He later moved to California, where he exhibited at L.A. Photographic Salon in 1902.

Right of center in the front row, leaning on two students is the sign that reads "S.N.S. '95." The photo is signed "Krauch." The photographer is Charles A. Krauch.
